President Biden released an executive action this morning announcing the extension and expansion the Deferred Enforced Departure (D.E.D.) program for Hong Kongers until Jan. 26, 2025. The DED program has been broadened to accommodate newer arrivals who are present in the U.S. as of today, so long as they meet the original list of eligibility requirements.
The HKDC team is grateful for the decision. We thank friends in the NSC, State Department, and Congress for moving the policy forward whenever they are able to. So, so, so much hard work is done behind the scene to come to this decision. A single memorandum involves an unimaginable number of people. Thousands of people who’ve benefited from the D.E.D. program over the past 18 months — living, studying, working, and keeping the fight for Hong Kong alive — are relieved to know that our most basic security is guaranteed for the next 24 months.
