//《追新聞》上周二(27日)揭發BNO歡迎計劃受資助團體中,位於英國曼徹斯特的慧妍社獲地區撥款近4萬鎊(約40萬港元),該組織主席邱李惠霞於2021年、以視像形式出席中國共產黨成立百周年大會。29個組織周一(3日) 聯署要求慧妍社回應公眾疑慮,當中包括要求交待該組織主席與中國共產黨及中國駐英機構疑似有密切關係,包括出席中國共產黨黨慶;以及慧妍社副主席王曉方(Karen Wang)擔任曼徹斯特大學孔子學院執行院長。

We, at Wai Yin Society, would like to address recent observations regarding our attendance at the anniversary event celebrating the formation of a political party. We feel it is essential to clarify our stance on this matter to avoid any misconceptions or misunderstandings.
Wai Yin was founded in 1988 as Wai Yin Chinese Women’s Society by a group of Hong Kong and Chinese women with a community consciousness and a commitment to women’s rights and development.
We exist to help the underprivileged, those discriminated against, and present a fair and kind face to the people that we help. We have done this proudly for 35 years, and we are one of the pillars of Mancunian society.
Over 35 years, as Manchester grew more diverse, through immigration from other parts of the UK and the world, we too have expanded our services, and we now serve the wider ethnically diverse community, dropping “Chinese Women’s Society” from our name, as we serve now more than just women, or indeed, more nationalities than just the Chinese: broadening our help to include all minorities such as Somalis, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Indians, and other European nationals. As an organisation dedicated to serving our community and fostering an inclusive environment, we believe in actively engaging with various events and gatherings held within our community.
Here are examples of our community engagement to illustrate the breadth of our diversity:
Chinese and Hong Kong community project to bring elderly Asians together through eating together, alleviating loneliness and creating purpose
Muslim community Iftar events, sharing a community meal with Muslim community members at their mosque together with other organisations. Many organisations were in attendance.
Buddhist community celebration event organised by Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple. Many community organization were in attendance.
Greater Manchester Police Chinese New Year’s event, along with other community members in attendance.
Jewish festival along with other community organisations and members.
Caribbean Countries community: Invitation to a Windrush event organised by Lord Mayor’s office.
African day celebration event with other community organisations and members.
Service for Ukraine at Manchester Cathedral.
King’s Charles Coronations Garden Party at Buckingham Palace
Wai Yin is a fully independent organisation. It also is not affiliated with the Confucius Institute nor does it run any programmes with them. We do not discriminate based on religious or political affiliations and simply strive to help those in the community who need or ask for our help.
We also invite the local Mayor, Councillors, MPs and other charity/voluntary organisations to our events, and of course, we attend event invitations (as the above list illustrates) from all communities. Because we seek to overcome discrimination, having started out as an organisation pro women’s rights ourselves, we ourselves do not discriminate or exclude invitations from other organisations by race or nationality, but rather, seek to foster an atmosphere of inclusiveness around everything that we do and stand for.
We are a charity dedicated to helping the community: and therefore our presence at any other organisation’s events is completely apolitical. Our attendance at any event should not be construed as an endorsement or indication of any alignment with any political belief or ideology. Our dedication to neutrality allows us to provide equal support and resources to all, regardless of gender, ethnic, cultural, or political backgrounds, as we firmly believe in the power of unity and collective effort in shaping a better future for the world.
Moreover, it must be also stressed that as an organisation handling data, we are in strict adherence to data protection and GDPR guidelines. As board members do not have access to personal data.
As we had been founded by a group of Hong Kong migrants 35 years ago, we are now proud to serve the Hong Kong community with the Welcome Hong Kong Programme. This programme aims to empower and provide resources and skills to newly-arrived Hong Kongers via the BN(O) visa, which was introduced by the government in 2021. This includes (a) social integration activities, including volunteering, befriending, and raising of well-being; (b) acccessing employment, such as CV workshops, and skills for living in the UK; (c) advice work to support Hong Kongers with complex needs, such as accessing mental health services, domestic abuse, and family support services.
We thank you for your continued trust and support in our endeavours. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly.
