Re: Austin HKCC在12/9 有尊子漫畫展
It’s arriving to Austin
HKCC x We The HongKongers x NorCal HK Club, along with various local organizations, are currently/will be holding a joint exhibition of the renowned political comics by Hong Kong cartoonist Zunzi尊子in ten cities including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the next stop will be in Austin!
Art Under China's Red Line: Satire by Zunzi
Hong Kong Political Cartoonist Zunzi's Archival World Exhibition
Date: 12/9
Time: 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Location: 1171 E Cesar Chavez St Suite B, Austin, TX 78702
We will display multiple artworks by Zunzi along with two authentic pieces. Everyone is welcome to come and visit. Additionally, we are in need of volunteers. If you also want to contribute to this meaningful event, please leave a message below.
About the Exhibition:
On display is a series of work selected from the four-decade career of satirical cartoonist Zunzi (Wong Kei-kwan), a Hong Kong political cartoonist known for his satire and pro-democracy stance. Using lighthearted cartoons as an expressive medium, Zunzi comments on serious social issues, and criticizes government policies and political figures. His works have been published in major Hong Kong newspapers such as Ming Pao and now-defunct Apple Daily.
After the passage of the National Security Law in June 2020, Zunzi’s work repeatedly came under attack by government officials. In May 2023, after receiving complaints from the HK government, Ming Pao announced that Zunzi cartoons would stop publishing. It was reported that Zunzi's publications were also taken down in Hong Kong public libraries since then.
Through Zunzi’s work, this exhibition outlines important social trends in Hong Kong across four decades. The abrupt termination of Zunzi’s series illustrates the rapid decline in press freedoms under the newly established national security apparatus that perpetuates itself through continuous political persecution in Hong Kong and abroad.
