【Statement about the violent attack on Hong Kong protestors outside and inside of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Manchester】
We are appalled to learn that the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Manchester sent staff to harass and assault protestors who were peacefully protesting outside of the Consulate.
Video footage shows staff from the consulate dressed in riot gear stepping outside of the Consulate grounds onto UK soil in an attempt to remove protest banners, placards and pictures on the street which is UK soil.
In this attempt to quash the protest, the Consulate resorted to brutal violence. Consular officials can be seen dragging protestors onto Consulate grounds behind the gates and proceeding to beat them in full view of Greater Manchester Police.
We strongly condemn this ruthless assault on peaceful Hong Kong protestors and their right to protest by Chinese Communist Party officials.
In the Consulate’s statement to BBC Chinese, they said that ‘diplomatic missions wouldn’t tolerate their head of state being derogated by protestors’. This cannot justify the violent crackdown on protestors who are rightly holding anyone who abuses their power over people to account, esp. like the one-party dictatorship in Beijing.
Most Hongkongers are British nationals who uphold the freedoms which the UK is committed to and failed to uphold in Hong Kong.
We urge the UK Home Secretary and Greater Manchester Police to initiate a criminal investigation against the attackers, the UK Foreign Secretary to summon the Consul General, Zheng Xiyuan, who is believed to be involved in the attack, and Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang for an apology, and to bear any legal and diplomatic consequences.
