On 15 Mar 2024, Star Shiner and HKAAB co-organized the North America premiere for the documentary "She's in Jail", a debut production by Ako Tomoko at UC Berkeley. Hong Kong barrister and Cambridge graduate Chow Hang-tung, the protagonist, is the former vice chairman of Hong Kong Alliance in support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China.
Chow was convicted of "participating in unauthorised assembly" and "illegally inciting others to participate" in December 2021 and January 2022 respectively for organising candlelight vigils commemorating the Tiananmen Massacre victims in 2020 and 2021, with a total sentence of 22 months in prison. At the same time, the Hong Kong police also charged Chow, former chairman Lee Cheuk-yan, and vice chairman Albert Ho with "inciting subversion of state power" under the National Security Law. When convicted, Chow could face up to 10 years in prison.
In this documentary, Ako combines footage of Chow organising activities for the Hong Kong Alliance, interviews with social activists and scholars from Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia who were influenced by Chow, as well as letters to and from Chow after she was jailed. These detailed accounts shed light on Chow’s life story, illustrating her unwavering determination to not plead guilty in the face of powerful oppression. Despite her arrest on 4 June 2021, Chow persisted in a hunger strike in prison to honour the memory of the 1989 democracy movement in China. When questioned in court about understanding of her charges, she defiantly chanted "there is nothing guilty about remembering 4 June victims."
On Friday, dozens of Berkeley students and San Francisco Bay Area residents came to the premiere, expressing deep concern over groundless charges against Chow, and the enactment of the National Security Law and the Basic Law Article 23 in Hong Kong. Following the screening, Mr. Alex Chow, former Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, engaged with the audience in a Q&A session. He shared his experience serving a prison sentence in Hong Kong and shared insights on navigating the challenges of working as a youth minority professional in the United States, while fostering solidarity for diasporic Hong Kongers.
"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting." Star Shiner urges the public to maintain focus on Chow Hang-tung’s case and on the plight of prisoners of conscience in jails throughout Hong Kong and China.
