🇨🇦 Canada Conservative Party Spokesperson clarifies stance on Hong Kong’s allegations against Canadian citizens
In response to the Hong Kong government issuing arrest warrants and bounties for Canadian citizens, the Director of Communications for the Conservative Party of Canada, Sarah Fischer, said that “the Conservative Party does not recognize the allegations made by the Beijing-controlled Hong Kong administration as legitimate.”
On Christmas Eve 2024, the Hong Kong authorities issued a third round of arrest warrants with HK$1 million bounties for six overseas Hong Kongers, including Joseph Tay and Victor Ho, both of whom are resident in and citizens of Canada. Last week, Canadian media reported these bounties as potential foreign interference in Canadian politics, targeting Joe Tay, who is seeking a federal Conservative nomination. You can find the full report in the comments.
Earlier this month, a cross-party group of nine former and current Canadian parliamentarians, including six Hong Kong Watch Patrons, issued a joint statement on the Hong Kong government’s targeting of the two Canadian citizens. In the statement, they emphasised that “transnational repression has no place in Canada.”
Hong Kong Watch would like to thank our Patrons and allies for denouncing the Hong Kong government’s transnational repression against individuals who advocate for democracy worldwide.
Katherine Leung, Canada Policy Advisor of Hong Kong Watch, said:
“We are happy to see the Conservative Party of Canada clarify that arrest warrants and bounties from a foreign government that does not respect human rights will not impede the right of a Canadian citizen to stand for election. The only ‘crime’ committed by the six overseas Hong Kongers named on Christmas Eve was to speak out for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong, and having voices so impactful that the Hong Kong government seeks to quash them.
No Canadian should have their right to stand for election, whether it be a party nomination or federal election, jeopardized by a foreign government’s attempt to silence them.”
