The Exiles Documentary
Christine Choy is a legend in the Civil Rights Movement for Asian Americans. Her Oscar nominated documentary “Who Killed Vincent Chin” exposed the racial discrimination and injustice against Asian Americans in the judicial system. The case finally went all the way to the Supreme Court.
In “The Exiles”, Christine used her first person narrative to interview 3 important figures of the 1989 pro-democracy movement: academic Yan Jiaqi, student leader Wu’er Kaixi and businessman Wan Runnan. It captured their arrival in the United States shortly after the Tiananmen Massacre to their life journeys 30 years later. It shows their humanities rarely captured by these public figures.
The documentary won the Grand Prize for Documentary Feature at last year's Sundance Film Festival.
“The Exiles” will be screened at Roxie Theater starting from 12-09. There will also be a special screening of “Who Killed Vincent Chin” on 12-11. Christine Choy and the directors will attend the Q&A sessions of the following 3 screenings.
Good news: Roxie will provide a $2 discount if you purchase the tickets at the box office onsite for these 3 screenings. All you need to do is to mention “NorCal HK Club”.
