《香港人：黎智英為自由而奮鬥》 栢克萊放映
今個學期HKAAB將會舉辦流散媒體分享會， 聯同光傳媒、如水雜誌等流散媒體探討國安法實施後香港的傳媒生態以及近年香港流散媒體的發展趨勢。爲此，我們將提前於十月二日於柏克萊舉辦《香港人：黎智英為自由而奮鬥》記錄片放映會，希望借此機會讓大家更全面了解香港傳媒發展的歷史。
《香港人：黎智英為自由而奮鬥》聚集黎智英過往的採訪片段，重新描繪他從偷渡來港至投身傳媒與民主運動的經歷，透過他的故事追溯香港自九七回歸的民主政治歷史。
二零二零年八月，壹傳媒及蘋果日報創辦人黎智英被捕被控《港區國安法》第29條「勾結外國勢力」。其後二零二一年六月另外六名高層成員涉嫌違反「串謀勾結外國勢力」而被捕。至今，黎智英已被囚禁超過千日。我們誠意邀請大家參與是次放映，一同回想香港人過往如何捍衛和利用新聞言論自由，反思我們在自由被蠶食鯨吞的未來之下又如何自處。我們應該沉默下去，還是應該像片頭的黎智英所述：「寧鳴而死，不默而生」?
This semester, HKAAB will be holding a town hall discussion with Photon Media and Flow HK exploring Hong Kong’s news media landscape post-NSL and the recent growth in Hong Kong diasporic media. To provide a better basis for understanding the history of Hong Kong journalism, we will also be hosting a screening on October 2nd of The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai’s Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom.
Weaving interviews with Jimmy Lai prior to his arrest with archival footage of Hong Kong, The Hong Konger reconstructs the life experiences of Jimmy Lai and traces the history of Hong Kong political movements following the 1997 handover through @acton_institute his story.
In August of 2020, Next Media and Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai, alongside six other senior management members, were arrested under suspicion of “collusion with foreign forces”, among other charges. Jimmy Lai has been imprisoned for over 1000 days. We invite you all to join us in recollecting how Hongkongers have utilized and defended the freedom of speech and press in the past, and how Hongkongers may situate and define themselves in a future of diminishing freedoms. Should we become silent? Or should we do as Jimmy Lai mentions at the beginning of the documentary: “Rather die singing than live a silent life”?
