【Third Anniversary of the Anti-Extradition Movement: Two Million and One Protesters on June 16, 2019】
On June 16, 2019 — four days after the violent crackdown on protesters outside the Legislative Council — the Civil Human Rights Front organized its fourth mass demonstration against the extradition bill. The people protested against police brutality as they demanded that the June 12 confrontation not be characterized as a riot and that Carrie Lam step down as chief executive.
That day, Hong Kongers ditched their white shirts from the week before and switched to wearing black instead. They gathered at Victoria Park, and crowds headed to Hong Kong Island from every district. The front row held a black handwritten sign with the words “Withdraw the Evil Bill” in white and chanted such slogans as “No Riots, Only Tyranny.”
Some people diverted to Pacific Place in Admiralty to memorialize the man who had fallen to his death the previous evening, Marco Leung. Many brought and left behind white flowers. Others folded flowers with paper or distributed white ribbons. The Civil Human Rights Front announced an unprecedented “two million and one” participants and indicated the “plus one” represented Leung, who had sacrificed for the anti-extradition movement. This marked the single most-attended protest in Hong Kong’s history.
