The Chinese government has been implementing the Zero-Covid policy for three years, which has severely damaged the daily life and freedom of the Chinese people. A fire that broke out in Urumqi, Xinjiang, completely ignited the public's outrage with the policy and Chinese government on November 26, 2022. When the people of Shanghai spontaneously took to the streets to mourn their compatriots who died in the fire, no one expected that this mourning activity would trigger a nationwide protest. The violent suppression of the Chinese government also followed...
I am PLATO, the director of [影片英译名]. On the evening of Nov 26th, 2022, I witnessed and participated in the anti-lockdown protests in Shanghai. It was my first time ever participating in a political event in China. It was also my first time shouting out loud my political beliefs and demands in Chinese.
The documentary includes the protest footages I filmed that evening, as well as relevant video clips highly circulated on the Chinese Internet. I hope to show the effects of the Zero-COVID policies on ordinary people — how the Chinese government managed to build a political pressure cooker, and how this pressure cooker eventually exploded when the Chinese people decided to take the streets.
After the conclusion of the protests, the Chinese government refused to acknowledge its wrongdoings and China's political reality. Instead, it accused ‘foreign interferences’ as the culprit behind the White Paper Movements. Well, was that actually what had happened?
On the one-year anniversary of the protests, I am releasing [Not The Foreign Force], a work of remembrance of the unprecedented political movement. Aside from sharing my experiences during the protests, I would also like to open the discussion: When an internal conflict arises in China, why are ‘foreign interferences’ always needed to shoulder the blame? Does the existence of ‘foreign interferences’ imply that China does not have any internal problems?
I’m confident that everyone knows the answers to these questions.
The more the Chinese government tries to misguide the public and to encourage its people to forget, the more we need to speak up and to remind ourselves to remember.
Please remember the White Paper Movement. Please remember Nov 26th, 2022. Please remember Middle Wulumuqi Road. Please remember the fire in Xinjiang. Please remember the bus that fell off the mountain in Guizhou. Please remember the Zero-COVID policies. Please remember the government's Dabai ‘Big White’ PCR testers and their hazmat suits. Please remember what happened at Tiananmen Square on Jun 4th, 1989. Please remember the Cultural Revolution. Please remember the Great Chinese Famine.
Please remember what’s despicable — so that you’ll always seek what’s bright.
I hope China will welcome its own brightness in the near future.
